UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB

Tuesday - February 12, 2013

At our Tuesday weekly meeting, our newest member, Lion Mario Resendez (# 6)
won the pot on the second drawing, after David Hamilton (#12) missed his
chance by being absent.

Attendance was 36 (perhaps a modern-day record), with 18 members, three
"regular" guests - Jerry Casteel, Dave Redmon, Jr., and Louie Ulmer [who
turned in his membership application!!]-a KAIT-8 cameraman, and fourteen
guests involved in the 2012-2013 Lions International Peace Poster contest
sponsored by our club: Westside Middle School contest winner Zach Mitchell
and his parents and older brother, Nettleton Middle School winner Seth Gage
and his parents and art teacher David Early, and International Studies
Magnet School winner Bailey Burnett and her parents and grandparents [Rev. &
Mrs. Rex Darling] and art teacher Valerie Duncan.

Program:

Our meeting recognized the local winners of our 2012-2013 Lions
International Peace Poster contest for 11-13 year olds and their families
and art teachers at our three participating schools: Westside Middle
School, Nettleton Middle School, and the International Studies Magnet
School. After PDG Pat Snodgrass made comments about Lions in general, and
Charles Hartwig gave an overview of the art contest [the 12th one in a row
sponsored by our club], the art teachers made brief comments about their
students and the contest, and then each student winner explained his/her
poster, while holding it up for the audience to see. Their posters had been
sent on to participate in the regional District 7-0 competition after our
local contests last November, and District Governor Betty Payne had returned
the posters, along with certificates from the District and cash from the
District for ALL students who had participated by making a winning poster
this year. The District awards were as follows: Seth Gage received a
participation certificate and cash; Bailey Burnett received an Honorary
Mention certificate, ribbon and cash, and Zach Mitchell received a 3rd place
certificate and ribbon, plus cash. (Photos of the three winners with their
posters are on our club website <http://www.uhlions.comwww.uhlions.com
- along with photos of the winners of our local contests for the past six
years.)
