UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB

Tuesday - March 17, 2015

President Jim Watkins opened the weekly meeting at 6:50 am, which featured
18 Lions in attendance, plus two local schools' Peace Poster winners and
their families [see below], Art Teacher Valerie Duncan from the
International Studies Magnet School (ISMS), AND one guest of Lion Dave
Redmon:  his son Dave Redmon, Jr.

Since it was St. Patrick's Day, Tail Twister Bill Dickens was in full
leprechaun mode, complete with a green bowler hat and a large kettle with
"gold" coins in it - which strangely enough neither the Treasurer nor the
waitress accepted as legal tender.  Bill also had some [bad] Irish jokes;
fortunately not too many.

The Tail Twisters pot was won by Pat Snodgrass (#31) on the second drawing,
after #8 was first drawn, but Curt Hodges was sadly absent.

Presentations:

1.      Peace Poster winners.  After ISMS Art Teacher Valerie Duncan told
the attendees a bit about this year's Lions International Peace Poster
contest preparations at her school, the ISMS winner Jessie Woodard and the
Westside Middle School winner Brooke Peyton came up and talked about their
posters. See photo below; Jessie on the left side, Brooke on the right,
with PR Chair Charles Hartwig in the middle.  The mystery arm coming in on
the left belonged to Eric Grant.]  Jessie's mother and Brooke's parents were
also at the meeting.  Brooke's poster had also taken 2nd place in the
District 7-0 competition.

2.      Tony Bari got a 35 year membership chevron and congratulations
letter from the Lions International President.

Announcements:

- Car Show.   Committee Chair Ron McCormick said that a Car Show Committee
meeting will be held next Monday, March 23rd,  at 6:30 pm in the Suddenlink
Media office on Stone Street, and urged everyone to attend, as goodie bag
stuffing will take place then.  While 63 vehicles had been registered thus
far, more vehicles, sponsors, and vendors are needed, as this crucial
fund-raiser is only 11 days away now!!

--Cabinet Meeting.  The Lions District 7-0 Cabinet meeting will take place
THIS Saturday, March 21st, at the Forrest Home Church Children and Youth
Building, 1004 Windover Rd., starting at 10 am [lunch will be served].  Brad
Baker asked for help setting up tables, etc., beginning at 9 am.  District
ALERT [disaster preparedness] chair Pat Snodgrass noted that the new
District ALERT trailer will be there in the parking lot for attendees to
check out.

March Business Meeting:

a.      Draft Board Minutes from the March 12th Board meeting were read by
Secretary Charles Hartwig.  A highlight was the approval of new member
applicant Rick Barker, who will be initiated into the club at the next
weekly meeting.

b.      The Monthly Financial Report was distributed and reviewed by
Treasurer Ron Erwin.  It looks like the Nut Sales project will gain the club
over $4500, according to project chair Bill Dickens [still sporting his
green hat].  126 cases had been ordered; the final 5 or 6 cases will
hopefully be sold at the Car Show on March 28-29.
