UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB

Tuesday - April 23, 2013

At our weekly Tuesday morning meeting today, Jim Mashburn [# 2] won the Tail Twisters' pot on the third drawing, after Kevin Reed [#49] and Albert Frankenberger [#4] turned out to be absent.

Attendance was 22 members and one guest:  Bigelow Robinson, revolving loan fund manager for the East Arkansas Planning and Development District, who was a guest of Robert Bahn.

Announcements:

1.  We will take part in the "Paint the Town Green" Recycle Day this coming Saturday, April 27th, by collecting used eyeglasses at the ASU Farmers' Market from 8 am - noon.  Eight other organizations will also be collecting everything from children's books to old TV sets at the corner of Stadium and Aggie.  [The Market will not open for produce until early May.]  A sign-up list was passed around -- see the end of this message for the results.

2.  Lion Brad Baker announced that a check for $7490 was to be mailed later in the day to purchase a SPOT vision screening device for the three Jonesboro Lions clubs to use.  Funds came from the December TV auction, plus a $1000 grant from the Wal-Mart/Sam's Foundation and $500 from LOAF -- the Lions of Arkansas Foundation.

Program:

Lion Jim Watkins introduced Dr. Marti Allen, Director of the ASU Museum, who gave an outstanding program about the first annual "Rockabilly Boogiefest" held last month and plans for future ones, designed to raise funds for a permanent exhibit at the museum to recognize the unique Northeast Arkansas musical genre now called "rockabilly."  Fortunately the audio part of her slide presentation did not work -- "fortunately" because Dr. Allen then belted out segments of around a dozen songs in a very lively manner to demonstrate rockabilly music -- and got many of the audience to join in, as well.  Who says that Lions can't rock!

President Curt called a special Board meeting after the end of the regular meeting to meet with our wonderful tax advisor Georgie Redmon to deal with some IRS issues.

Final April program arranged by Jim Watkins:

April 30th       Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin
