Lion Tony Bari (#10) won the Tail Twister’s pot on the first drawing.  Our attendance was 18 members and no guests.

This was a sad day for our club in the loss of Lion Marcy Harrell.  Our condolences go out to Lioness Wanda and their family.  Lion Marcy was a 50 year Lion having joined the Black Rock Lions Club in 1959.  Marcy had more than 22 years of perfect attendance in 3 clubs (Black Rock, Walnut Ridge and University Heights).  He has given much service to Lions Clubs projects with most recently serving on the Board of Directors of Dyeann’s House.  We will miss him.

We have two flag days this month – May 16 for Armed Forces Day and May 25 for Memorial Day.  Sign up for your favorite flag route next Tuesday.  We need to collect the past due subscriptions for our flag service from those merchants that owe the $35.00 or remove their flag bracket this week.

Our next Board of Directors meeting will be Thursday, May 14, at 6:30 PM, at Al’s Restaurant.  At this meeting, we will vote to disburse funds from our Activity Fund for those service organizations our club supports.  All board members need to attend, both new and current officers.

Our speaker this week was Lt. Col. Jeffrey Helms, Professor of Military Science.  Col. Helms talked about the ROTC program at Arkansas State.  He is a 1991 West Point graduate and has served at several posts around the world, including Iraq.  He invited members to attend the ROTC Spring Commissioning Ceremony this Friday, May 8 at 3:00 PM in the Convocation Center Auditorium.  The guest speaker will be Col. Kendall Penn, Commander of the 39th Infantry Brigade, Arkansas National Guard.

Programs for May:

May 12     George Johnson, Craighead County Environmental Services Officer.  He will

Talk about issues such as littering (much in the news lately)

            May 19     Business Meeting

May 26     Charles Hartwig, local resident.  Program will be “Zanzibar: A Trip to the Spice Islands” – ref. our trip there last December.
