UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB

Tuesday - May 7, 2013

At our weekly Tuesday morning meeting this week, Ron McCormick (#48) won the
Tail Twisters pot after three other members turned up missing: Al
Frankenberger (#4), Mark Poe (#21) and  Mario Resendez (#6).

Attendance was, in addition to the speaker, 21 members and three guests:
Thomas Benedict, a member [and past Treasurer] of the Russellville Lions
Club who has moved to Jonesboro and is starting the process of transferring
his membership to our club; Danny Cole, a guest of Lion Donnie Kissinger,
and  KAIT-TV cameraman Adam Christler, who was there to record the meeting
and prepare a news item for that evening's news program.

Announcements:

1.    TV Auction Committee Chair Brad Baker displayed the new SPOT vision
screening device, which had arrived the day before, and noted that the
device was paid for by funds raised by the TV Auction in December (roughly
$6000), with help from the Wal-Mart Foundation (Treasurer Ron Erwin then
jumped up and displayed a huge $1000 Wal-Mart Foundation check replica for
the cameras) and $500 from the Lions Foundation of Arkansas [LOAF], which
had sent in $250 and promised the other $250 after getting confirmation that
we had received the device.  We will need to get a printer and schedule
training sessions before scheduling screening sessions - Sight Chair Bill
Levins was entrusted with the device while these details are worked out.

2.    Annual Awards and Installation Banquet.  Lion Tony Bari observed that
the best dates for our annual awards and new officer installation banquet
seems to be either June 18th or June 25th.  He will be working on the date
and the locale of the eagerly-anticipated event (at least that what
President Curt Hodges called it) and will advise the club of details
shortly.

Program:

May Program Chair Norman Dickson introduced Ashley Henning from the
Food Bank of North East Arkansas, who told the assemblage about the history
and work of the food bank, which is one of 202 regional food banks in the
US, associated with the Feeding America program. She noted that Arkansas is
tied with Mississippi for the sad label of worst state in the country in
food insecurity.  She also showed slides of the new Donald W. Reynolds
building here in Jonesboro, which has radically improved the facilities for
the food bank. (She is currently an ASU Intern at the Food Bank, will
graduate from ASU this weekend, and get married next week.)
