UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB

Tuesday - May 14, 2013

At our weekly Tuesday morning meeting this week, Tail-Twister-in-Training
Brad Baker took the podium, and immediately proved that he was a fast
learner when current Tail Twister Tony Bari (#10) won the Tail Twisters pot
on the very first drawing. [We could be in for a long year, folks.]

Attendance was, in addition to the speaker, 19 members and three guests: Don
Pullford [be careful if you shake his hand], a guest of Lion Bill Levins,
Dr. Hans Hacker, [who spoke to us about the 2nd Amendment on March 5th], a
guest of Lion Charles Hartwig; and Tom Benedict, a member [and past
Treasurer] of the Russellville Lions Club who has moved to Jonesboro to
manage the Tractor Supply store on Stadium Blvd, and who filled out a
membership form as part of the process of transferring his membership to our
club!

Announcements:

1.    Sight Chair Bill Levins noted that to help us use the new SPOT vision
screening device, which had arrived the week before, guest [and future
member] Tom Benedict has asked his Russellville Lions Club to copy and send
us information and forms which they had developed as part of their
experiences with their SPOT device.  This should help a lot as we begin the
process of figuring out how to best use the device to help spot vision
problems of young children in our area.

2.    Guest Hans Hacker announced that he will be taking part in a 350 mile
bike ride over the Memorial Day weekend to help raise funds for the
Jonesboro Police Department's DARE program. (DARE stands for Drug Abuse
Resistance Education, a national police-led program to help kids avoid drug
problems.  He and around 30 other riders will be taking part in this year's
BAD Ride - "Biking Arkansas for DARE.")  Anyone interested could donate via
[And if you rush, Ron (both Rons), there may still be time to enter the ride
as biker # 31 &/or # 32.]

3.    The club's Board will meet this Thursday, May 16th at 6:30 am.  (OK,
by the time you get this, it already has met.)

Program:

May Program Chair Norm Dickson introduced Mollie Baltimore of Hospital
Wing, a non-profit Memphis-headquartered helicopter medivac, or air medical
transport service firm which set up a base - their 5th-- in Jonesboro last
month.  She went over the history of her company and its offerings, which
was formed by a [rare] cooperative effort of the four major hospitals in
Memphis, but is now fully independent of any hospital or system. They are
having an open house in their base at the Jonesboro Airport this Saturday
(May 18th) from 11 am- 2 pm.  (Main building, near the Hertz car rental
office.)  Everyone is invited.

Next week:   Since our Board meets (met) this week, next Tuesday's (May 21)
morning meeting will be our May Business Meeting.

Reminder: New member application forms are online at
<http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/common/pdfs/me6b.pdf>
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/common/pdfs/me6b.pdf , and can be filled in at
that site and then printed off.

Invite a guest or prospective member.
