UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB

Tuesday - May 19, 2014

The May 19 meeting of the Jonesboro UH Lions Club welcomed new member Thomas (Tom) Woods who transferred his membership from Clinton, N.C. Woods told a little about himself including the fact that he is originally from Jackson, Miss., and graduated from Ole Miss.

He went to medical school and practiced medicine a while before becoming an othamologist. Recently retired, he and his wife returned to Jonesboro so she could be near her native Fontaine (Greene County east of Sedgwick).

Woods said when he learned what Lions did, he joined and has been a Lion since.

When Lion President-elect Jim Watkins called the meeting to order at 6:51 (in absence of Pres. Robert Bahn) there was a goodly number present, although how many remains a mystery.

What we do know is that Lion Woods, Lion Jim Mashburn and his wife and guest Helen, were there. We also know that Lion Bill Dickens led the song (!!), Lion Ron McCormick led the pledge and Lion Bill Levins the prayer. Tail Twister Brad Baker conducted the pot drawing with No. 10,  Lion Tony Bari the winner.

As this was the monthly business meeting, we received a financial report and learned that White Cane last week garnered $1,023.95 to be used in the club's sight and hearing  projects.

Members were reminded of Flag Day, Memorial Day, Monday, May. 26. Lion Ken Stallings was razzed for a photo in the local newspaper signifying his receiving an honorary doctorate of divinity (not the candy) and The club presented Lion Clinton "Crash" Kissinger with a graduation present.

Clinton graduates from Jonesboro High School and now all he has to do is decide where he will attend college, having received several scholarship offers.

Congratulations Clinton and good luck to you in the future! Remember- "Keep your eyes on the road, stay out of the ditches and don't let your hood fly up."
