UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB Tuesday - June 1, 2010   Lion Charles Hartwig (#51) won the Tail Twister’s pot on the first drawing. There were 17 members plus 8 guests in attendance. Guests were Jerry Wilcox, guest of Lion Pat Snodgrass; Don Bailey, guest of Lion Ron McCormick; Lion Hubert Bittle, guest of Lion Jim Mashburn and PDG Norine Westerbeck, representing the National Camps for Blind Children. Our speakers were Mayor Harold Perrin, Administrative Assistant Gary Harpole, Police Chief Mike Yates and Fire Chief Leonard Jadrich. Mayor Perrin presented the reason for the proposed ½ cent sales tax which will be voted on at the special election on August 10. Gary Harpole gave financial reasons for the tax increase. The Fire and Police Departments and other Public Services for our city will receive the majority of the funds generated by the tax. Mayor Perrin called this tax “A Get By” tax. You can hear more about the proposed tax by attending a meeting every Thursday evening at the City Hall Building on Huntington Ave. Our program for next Tuesday will be brought by our own Lion Curt Hodges and Managing Editor Maria Flora, from the Jonesboro Sun. Lion Curt says they will address any question we may have concerning the operation of running a newspaper. This should be an interesting program. Invite a guest and some of our missing members. The Board of Directors will meet Thursday, June 10, at 6:30 AM at Ann’s Restaurant. Both present and newly elected officers should attend. Lion Secretary Pat is asking for each member who believes they have 100% attendance to advise him so that awards can be ordered by the time of our Awards & Installation Banquet on June 29. Business meeting will be June 15. We have no program scheduled for the June 22nd meeting. The Program Committee does a good job in getting interesting programs and speakers for our meetings. They are always looking for available programs. If you have suggestions for programs, let the Program Committee know.
