UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB

Tuesday - June 3, 2014

At our Tuesday morning meeting this week, new member Tom Woods missed his
first meeting, and sure enough, his number [#19] was drawn for the Tail
Twisters' pot. His loss led to senior member Jim Mashburn [#2] to the prize,
however, and Jim happily collected the proceeds.   Attendance was 19, plus
our speaker and one guest.  The guest was Helen Mashburn, who had again
driven Lion Jim in to the meeting -- and hopefully got to share [or keep?]
the pot with her passenger.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

--Condolences.  The club expressed its condolences via
prayer and a sympathy card to the family of Lion Louie Ulmer, who had died
of a sudden massive heart attack the previous Saturday evening.  He was the
son of Lion Bryan Ulmer, who had sponsored his father when he joined our
club last year.

-- Awards/installation banquet  =  NEXT Tuesday evening, June 10th.  Members
were reminded that we will NOT be meeting next Tuesday morning, but rather
will meet at 6:30 pm in the evening at the Western Sizzlin Steakhouse at
2405 E. Highland Drive. [Dutch treat--i.e., pay for what you eat.] A sign-up
list was circulated; to give the restaurant an idea of how many to expect --
if you missed the meeting and/or the sign-up sheet -- please let Secretary
Charles Hartwig know of your plans to attend before next Monday, at

--Board meeting.  The club's Board will meet at 6:30 am at the
Chef's In restaurant THIS Thursday, June 5th.  Since this will be the last
meeting of the 2013-2014 Lions year -- the Bahn Administration -- both
current and new Board members are urged to attend.  (The June Business
Meeting of the entire club will take place on Tuesday morning, June 17th,
since the banquet will be next week.)

--"Quality of Life Suggestions".  President Robert Bahn
advised members that a new organization in Jonesboro whose membership
consists of representatives of all the civic groups in town is seeking
suggestions about 5 things that the city needs to do to improve the quality
of life for Jonesboro residents. Robert passed out a form seeking these
ideas, and asked that they be returned to him next week to he can give them
to the Mayor.  (If you do not have a form -- or lost it -- email your ideas
to him at rdbahn@yahoo.com.)

--Flag Day on June 14th.  The next flag day will be on Saturday,
June 14th, which is the national Flag Day.

SPEAKER:  June Program Chair Tony Bari introduced the speaker, Carltha
Crockett of the Area Agency on Ageing, who explained what the Agency does
for the aged in our area.  [It is NOT a government organization, but rather
a non-profit entity, serving 12 counties in NE Arkansas.]

--Charles Hartwig, filling in for Newsletter Editor Curt Hodges, who is
recovering from [successful] cataract surgery.
