UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB

Tuesday - July 9, 2013

There was such a hullabaloo that the club's newsletter editor forgot to
record who was the recipient of the "Pot of gold" in the legal lottery
drawing held each meeting. Charles Hartwig took care of that, noting that
Lion Vernon Drake, Badge No. 13, took home the prize.

The drawing by Lion Kevin Reed, speaker for the meeting, occurred following
the "Tail Twister" spiel, jokes, tall tales and a brag about a hole in one
or some other nonsense.

Lion President Robert Bahn called the meeting to order at 6:40 or 6:50 a.m.,
depending on whose watch or cell phone you believe, Curt Hodges' or Charles
Hartwig's.

The meeting song was "Happy Birthday" in recognition of the club's 50th
Anniversary. A suitable celebration, being planned by the Lions Information
Committee,  will be for a later date. The Pledge of Allegiance to the
American Flag was led by Lion Jim Watkins and the prayer by Lion Ron Erwin.

Lion Kevin Reed's presentation on "Cats of Ancient Egypt," was very
interesting and was accompanied by a display of ancient cat artifacts from
Egypt, a part of the Reed collection.  We learned that cats were not only
domesticated by Egyptians, but were revered for their companionship and
their pest control abilities - largely rodents and snakes. Mummified cats
have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs, Reed said.

The monthly board meeting will be at 6:30 a.m. Thursday (July 11) at Fat
City. Meetings resume July 16 at Chef's In, also at 6:30 a.m. with special
guest the son of Lion Charles who is a FedEx pilot in Asia and will talk
about some of his adventures.

The club's business meeting will be held on July 22.

The club's newsletter editor will not be at the July 23rd and 30th meetings as well
as on Aug. 13th.

Respectfully submitted.   Curt Hodges.
