UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB

Tuesday - July 26, 2011

Lion Don Vineyard (#18) was absent and Lion Jim Watkins (#43) won the Tail Twister’s pot on the second drawing.  Attendance was 18 members plus our guest speaker.

Past District Governor Norine Westerbeck advised that the Blind Camp has suffered a fire in the kitchen area and is needing special contributions for repairs.

Lion Brad Baker advised that our club has 8 seats available for the annual Mid South Lions Sight and Hearing dinner and auction on Saturday August 6 at 5:00 PM.  Advise Lion Brad if you plan to attend.

At the District 7-0 Cabinet meeting Saturday, the subject of sending relief goods to the Lions of Joplin, MO, came up.  There are several clubs in Arkansas that are participating in this worthy endeavor.   Another project that our International President Dr. Wing-Jun Tam has done is set a goal of planting 1 million trees around the world.  This is an environment restoration and civic beautification project that every member can participate in to help the environment.  See page 29 of the July-August issue of The Lion magazine.

Congratulations to Lion Bill Levins for being awarded the Lion of the Year award and plaque for year 2010-11.  Lion Bill serves our club on the Sight & Hearing, Flag Project, and the Auction Committees.

Our speaker this week was David Moore, Director of the Craighead County Office of Emergency Management.  The New Madrid earthquake happened 200 years ago on May 16, 1821.  A mock reenactment of the effects of another earthquake to our area was demonstrated by the CERT-Community Emergency Response Team during the 3 days of May 16,17, & 18.
