UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB

Tuesday - July 30, 2013

At our Tuesday morning meeting this week, our youngest member, Clinton
Kissinger (# 16) won the Tail Twister's pot on the first drawing - getting
up early during summer vacation DID pay off today!

Attendance was 18 members and [in addition to the speaker] one visitor, Mike
Palumbo, a guest of President Robert Bahn.

(NOTE: Three members forgot to sign in on the attendance roster located near
the door today.  Since this list is used to determine our food cost payments
to the restaurant, in addition to going into our club records, the Tail
Twisters are advised by this note that forgetful members who neglect to sign
in at future meetings would be excellent targets for fines!)

Announcements:

1.    Our Senior Lion Jim Mashburn (who got a 61 years 100% attendance pin
last month) has been in the hospital.  A get-well card was signed by members
-- heal fast, Jim!

2.    Lion Bill Dickens received a special Lions International 25 years 100%
attendance pin -- way to go, Bill!  (Only 36 more years, and you'll catch
Jim.)

3.    We have received a special thanks card from a camper whom we sponsored
at the Blind Camp for kids this year.

4.    The annual USA/Canada Leadership Forum, one of eight such regional
forums for Lions world-wide, is slated for Sept. 19-21 in the Kansas City
suburb of Overland Park, Kansas.  This is THE best event for learning about
Lionism and leadership; registration fees will go up $25 for forms mailed
after July 31st [tomorrow].  See details at

5.    Several important Lions fund-raising events are coming up on the next
three Saturdays, and members are urged to participate in these:

                        a. Saturday, August 3:  the Nettleton Lions' main
fund-raiser of the year, the famous Inspirations Southern gospel group.
6:30 pm in the Nettleton High School
Performing Arts Center.  $15 at the door--kids 12
and under free. Advance tickets are $12, from Nettleton Lions, or at Foo's
Pharmacy, Carter's Corner, & The Refinery.

b. Saturday, August 10:  The Mid-South Sight & Hearing's most important
fund-raiser of the year, the "Give the Gifts XXI" Dinner and Auction, will
be at the Memphis     Hotel [formerly the Marriott East, on Thousand Oaks],
starting at 5:30 pm, with a dinner and live auction beginning at 8 pm.  Our
club has a table for ten, so we need to fill it up.  Contact Lion Brad Baker
if you are interested in attending, and for more information, see

c. Saturday, August 17:  Calico Rock Lions Club Tractor Pull.  For more
information, contact PDG Rich Fischer at

Program:

July Program Committee Chair Charles Hartwig introduced Rich Zvosec, the new
Associate Athletics Director for Administration at ASU, also known as Coach
Z.  Coach Z, who has had a stellar career as a basketball coach and TV
sports commentator, went over current and future ASU athletic activities,
displaying an amazing knowledge of past and present ASU athletes, discussed
the mechanics and issues of game scheduling, and asked members if anyone was
interested in taking part in a new mentoring program for ASU athletes, to
give them some idea of what is involved in setting up a business, since most
of them will not be going to the professional level -- and even if they do,
they need some idea of what to do after their playing days are over.  Anyone
interested in the mentoring program could contact him at

Our scheduled programs for August, lined up by Lion Jim Watkins, are listed
below (invite a guest!).

Aug. 6 - Sheriff Marty Boyd (challenges on running a sheriff's department)

Aug. 13 - Amber Horton, American Cancer Society (recruiting volunteers for
cancer work)

Aug. 20 - Business meeting

Aug. 27 - Jason Penry, ASU Vice Chancellor for University Advancement

Reminder: New member application forms are online at
<http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/common/pdfs/me6b.pdf>
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/common/pdfs/me6b.pdf , and can be filled in at
