The meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 6 of the
University Heights Lions Club was
held at the Chef's In Buffet.
Before Lion President Robert Bahn
called the meeting to order, Tail
Twister Brad Baker opened the meeting
with a few jokes and announcements and
the "pot drawing." The pot was won by
Lion Bill Dickens after badge numbers
24 [Ron Erwin] and 9 [Donnie
Kissinger], both of whom were absent, were
The song, America the Beautiful, was
led by Tommy White; pledge by Curt
Hodges; and prayer by Larry Hinck.
Lion Jim Mashburn is out of the
hospital and has gone back to work.
Craighead County Sheriff Marty Boyd
talked about his job as Sheriff of
Craighead County. Boyd, who has more
than 22 years in law enforcement, all
of it with the Sheriff's Department, is
in his first term as sheriff. He
talked about all of the services
provided by the department, including
policing the county, operating the
detention center (jail) and the "hidden"
services such as serving of legal and
court papers. The department has 121
employees, including 29 deputies, a
number that Boyd wants to see increased
to better serve the county. It also has
an annual budget of more than $7
million. Currently there are 328
inmates housed in the jail (as of Monday,
