At our Tuesday meeting this week [Tuesday, September 11th], September Program Chair Norm Dickinson (#11) had his number picked by the speaker [!!] and won the pot, after now former-Lion Brad Carson's number (#44) was initially drawn. [#44 needs to be retired].
Attendance was 15 members, two guests (Bob Baker and Clinton Kissinger), and the speaker.
Some members had put out flags for Patriot Day ( 9/11) before the meeting,
while others did so after the gathering. Good work!
Members were reminded of the Board meeting slated for later in the week -
Thursday, Sept. 13th
Norm Dickson introduced the speaker, Southern College of Optometry student Savannah Brunt from West Virginia, who gave a fascinating account of how her fellow students who are members of SVOSH (Student Volunteers in Optometry for Service to Humanity) at the SCO prepare for their annual overseas service trips to provide eye exams and glasses to poor residents of [mostly] Latin American countries. She gave specific examples from her two trips-to Mexico and Jamaica-as illustrations of what the students do, and how local
Lions clubs in the target countries help provide accommodations and advance preparation for their visits. In response to a question, Savannah noted that SVOSH also makes shorter trips to US locations, including some in the MidSouth area. The club presented her with a $500 check to help the group with their work [it's in the budget], and club members gave her an estimated 1200 pairs of used glasses to take back to Memphis [Jim Mashburn had collected most of them].
Programs for the rest of the month scheduled by Lion Norm are listed below.
Invite a guest to these!
