With 18 members and two guests present, UH Lions Club President Jim Watkins called the meeting to order at 6:55 a.m. at the Chef’s In Buffet at 105 Burke Street.
Tail twister Bill  Dickens did his thing and Badge Numbers 18 and 19 were drawn, that’s Don Vineyard and Tom Wood, for you who keep up with such things, and neither were present. However, No. 48, Ron McCormick, was present and pocketed the $4 and change with a big grin on his face.
Getting things underway, Donnie Kissinger led the song; Ron McCormick the pledge and Bryan Ulmer the prayer.
Jonesboro Police Chief (or is it Chief of Police?) Rick Elliott, speaker for the meeting, talked about his job and aims for the PD and introduced the department’s public information officer Paul V. Holmes, former employee of St. Bernard’s and former reporter and associate editor of The Jonesboro Sun.
Elliott pointed out that the department has 153 officers at this time and is also about 10 officers short.  He also noted that about eight months  is required for a new officer to train and meet other requirements between hiring and going on the streets as a certified and trained officer.
Elliott also talked about gaining trust of the community, a chief goal of his, community policing and relating positively with the different ethnic communities that are in Jonesboro.
Besides enlisting community trust in the department, the veteran officer and new police chief said public support and assistance is also a necessary factor in successful police work. “If you see crime happening, report it,” he said and noted there are several ways to do that - telephone, text, e-mail, facebook etc.
As to the “Wet-Dry” issue, Elliott said it is a quality of life issue and he personally does not support the county and city becoming “wet.” He said there are a lot of good things happening here and alcohol doesn’t need to be one of them.
Lions were reminded of the upcoming TV Auction and the need for auction items to be sold in the upcoming fund raiser.
Lions were also reminded of the monthly board meeting Thursday at 6:30 am at Chef’s In.
