UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB

Tuesday - November 8, 2011

Lion David Hamilton (#12) and Lion Randy Dent (#23) were both absent and Lion Jim Watkins (#54) won the Tail Twister’s pot on the third drawing.

Attendance was 18 members plus 2 guests.  Jerry Casteel was a guest of Lion Bill Levins.

We will fly the flags Friday for Veterans Day.  The downtown route will be left up for the Veterans Day parade Saturday.  All other routes will fly the flags on Friday only.

We had a most interesting program this week with Louis Intres talking about life in the deserts of Jordan and Egypt and smuggling and black market sales of antiquities in the Middle East.  Louis is an ASU History Department instructor and has spent much time in the Middle East living with the Bedouin population in the desert.  The Black Market sales of antiquities from grave robbers amount to 3 to 5 billion dollars annually in the Middle East.  Louis works with Interpol in this endeavor to protect from smuggling these valuable artifacts.

Lion Bill Dickens reports that our pecan sales are going great and we are collecting several items for our auction.  Keep selling pecans and collecting items for the auction, Dec. 10th.

Programs scheduled:

            Nov.  15 – Business meeting

Nov.  22 – Lion Charles Hartwig, “Hong Kong Today”

Nov.  29 – Dr. Michael Dockter, ASU Vice Chancellor/Chief Research Officer, “ASU’s Growing Research Enterprises”

Invite a prospective member next Tuesday.

Lion PDG Pat Snodgrass is asking anyone who would like to Ring the Bell for the Salvation Army to let it be known to Lion Pat.

A donation of $200 will be made to the city of Jonesboro Winter Wonderland project, which runs from November 21 to December 23.  They can also use some help promoting this children’s activity.

The location of Winter Wonderland is 215 West Monroe St.
